I’m going to be working for Triangle Studios during my internship. They are a game development company in Leeuwarden with about 20 people working there. Due to the COVID-19 crisis around 6 of them work from home. I think there are about 3 other interns here but they work from home. One of them even lives in Brasil!
On the first day I started out getting introduced to all the colleagues by Tjalling (developer) and he told me some general stuff about the breaks and ways of day to day work and stuff. I talked to Stefan briefly and then I went to install the projects required.
This looked easier than it was, it required settings adjustments in SourceTree and this basically took me the entire day. Stuff went wrong in the meantime so I had to download the large project file all over again. So a bit of a rough start I guess.
I’ve had a lot of fun during the hour long break from 12:00 till 13:00. Just chatting with coworkers. I tend to socialize pretty easy but at first I was still a little shy to open my mouth anyway. Later on I fit right in It was a rough day at first, mostly because of my slow laptop. I probably need to upgrade to an SSD at some point.
The second day I came to the office again and go some instructions on which projects I could get to work on. So I started out on a localization package that’s going to be used in all the games. I needed to make it into a package because they previously just used to copy paste this stuff. This way they could change the version of the package and download the new one from their server to the projects. As you can imagine, this increases the workflow a lot. It took me some time to get used to the way it was programmed and what kind of function it had exactly in the localization package.
Next was the build server improvements, this was already a package but it needed some changes to the way it worked. It’s basically an easy way for the team to make different builds for all platforms, and it has some settings in the project settings window and a button on the toolbar in Unity.
Anyway this used some old functions that needed to be replaced and the button mentioned didn’t actually work. This was a larger project than the previous one so it took me some time to get used to it. But in the end it was actually pretty easy to make the required changes.
I would say the first week was different than I expected since I got to work two days in the office instead of the regular five or my COVID-19 expectation: zero. Already learned a lot and happy to continue working next week!
